Blake Lewis Thinks Outside the Box With Us

He didn’t end up winning American Idol, but second place is suiting 25-year-old Bothell, Wash., native Blake Lewis just fine. Here, America’s favorite beatboxer gets candid with Us to reveal his thoughts on breaking Idol rules, winning fans’ hearts, and clubbing with Lindsay and Paris.

Usmagazine.com: You finished second on May 23, but your 866-IDOLS voting line remained open as of last week. Is it too late to demand a recount?
Blake Lewis: No recount. Second place is the first place to be.

Us: Simon and Co. first heard you sing in your hometown of Seattle. What about the city or music scene there has shaped you as a performer?
BL: There’s so much. I could name 10 bands right now that should be signed to a major label – The Mob Law, Doxology – it really depends on what you’re looking for. I’m very fortunate I got on this show and I try and rep my homies as much as possible, wearing my favorite bands’ t-shirts from Seattle. I’m going home at the end of the week and my friends are playing at The High Dive and Neumos – my favorite venues.

Us: Another hometown cause close to your heart is Seattle Children’s Hospital, for which you are raising cancer research funds in honor of two friends affected by lymphoma. How do you plan to expand your outreach efforts?
BL: Just keep doing it. Anything I can do to help with a greater cause is awesome and seeing a smile on kids’ faces is priceless. I visited a hospital here this week and taught the kids how to beatbox. It’s just so great to see little kids that are into it, because if I had seen that when I was a kid that age, who knows where I’d be now.

Us: Now that you are “Blake Lewis from American Idol,” rumors must be swirling about your public and private life. What outlandish rumors have you laughing?
BL: You know, I haven’t even heard any. I love [how I’m referred to as] “The Rebel.” It’s so funny. I didn’t stay out past curfew every night. It was probably more like every other night. [Laughs]

Us: Weren’t you out with Lindsay Lohan once at Les Deux?
BL: [Chuckles] I was never there with her. People get stuff out of context. I was at that club many times and she’s always there, Paris is always somewhere. But if she’s there, I’m like [sarcastically] “woopie, cool, good for her.” I’m not a fan. I’m not going to lie about it. If they’re not nice to you on the first impression, they’re probably not going to be nice to you on the second. I choose not to hang out with those people.

Us: But you did spend plenty of time with your roommates Phil Stacey and Chris Richardson.
BL: I had the greatest time with Phil and Chris. Chris and I hung out all the time - 18 hours a day and then we’d sleep and do it again. We got through the show with each other.

Us: So, Cassanova, word on the street is that you hold the record for the most ‘marry me’ signs on Idol. Any chance you’ll settle down with your own family someday?
BL: In the next 5-10 years. I’m focused on my career and have to be selfish right now. I really want to get this album out and go on tour. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll allow myself to be open to [a long-term relationship] for maybe 3-6 years. If true love comes into play, though, you can’t stop that.

Us: You say good art inspires you, and you translate that through your many tattoos. Any chance you’ll pop up on Miami Ink now that you’re so well-versed in reality TV?
BL: Maybe “L.A. Ink” if it comes into play. I don’t know about Miami Ink. I definitely want to get my whole entire back tattooed. I’ve been drawing a collage piece for two years. I would love it if [celebrity artist] Kat Von D wanted to do a piece on me.

Us: Viewers have also come to love your eclectic sense of style. Any plans to add “clothing designer” to your resume?
BL: I don’t know how to sew yet. I bought all the materials and then American Idol happened. I hung out with [celebrity designer] Ashton Michael last night and he’s going to hopefully teach me how to sew one day - when I have time. Timing was right and I got on Idol. Now hopefully timing will be right and I’ll tour for a while. It’s all timing for everything.

Jordin Sparks may have won American Idol, but Blake Lewis is definitely coming out on top in the U.S. singles charts.

His cover of Bon Jovi's You Give Love A Bad Name just cracked the top ten this week, coming in at #9.

Meanwhile, Sparks' This Is My Now lingers at #14.

She may have a bigger voice, but Blake's got that "it" factor with the girls and - especially - the boys.

This week's #1 song belongs to Rihanna with her highly infectious Umbrella.

Fergie climbs three spots to #3 with Big Girls Don't Cry.

And, Miz Amy Winehouse's Rehab jumps a whopping 25 spots, leaping from #55 to #30 this week.

Other gainers include Gwen Stefani's 4 in the Morning, which jumped from #65 to #56, and Nelly Furtado's All Good Things, which went from #93 to #68.

Now his EP has passed Jordin's! Well, actually, her EP just kinda flip-flopped with Amy Winehouse's Back to Black, but still, he is ahead of her!

Bad Name is currently at #10 on the singles chart, whereas This is My Now is at #13. I expected their songs to start slipping sooner or later, so this is no surprise. Though, it is nice to know that Blake's song, despite being a cover of a song, is holding stronger than Jordin's, which is a brand new song. That, and that his EP has 3976 reviews whereas Jordin's has 2309.

Basically, what I get from all of this is that while Jordin may have rose ahead in the beginning because of all the buzz of winning Idol, Blake has more longevity because he interests people other than just Idol fans because of his total awesomeness. Well, that's what I'd guess.

Let the teeny-belter have the title. For all intents and purposes, Blake Lewis won American Idol a month ago. With his audacious performance of "You Give Love A Bad Name," the 25-year-old redefined Idol, dragging the show into another era--one that recognizes risk and innovation, even if it doesn't always reward them. Which is fine, because what kind of musical rebel wants to win a mass-consumption popularity contest anyway?

Not that Blake was always a contender. From the moment we spotted him at the Seattle auditions he seemed--how to put this delicately?--an unlikely Idol. On second thought, the heck with delicate: The dude was short, average-to-cute, and seriously goofy (he did, after all, go by the stage name "BShorty"). To top it off, his fame-claiming skill--beatboxing--could easily have made him the Vanilla Ice of the competition. (Don't worry. He's in on the joke: "I poke fun at myself. I can't take myself seriously all the time.") Fact is, he scraped through the auditions singing Seal's "Crazy" mainly on the strength of Paula's cheerleading.

Then there was Hollywood Week, certain death to all one-trick ponies. But Blake not only galloped through, he did so using his one trick, serving as the backseat for his group's rendition of "How Deep Is Your Love." And then Blake Lewis did something truly shocking--he sang. Surprise! Turns out, he has a great voice--buttery and smooth. It's a crooner's tenor that, with edgy song choices (like Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know"), sounds surprisingly contemporary.

Not that Blake was perfect. When you're the zig-when-they-zag sort, you're bound to make a few missteps. Like that heinous tuxedo T-shirt he sported during Barry Gibb Week--in fact, everything he did during Barry Gibb Week. But then, Blake--known in the Idol camp for sneaking out past curfew--always was controversial. From his blond-to-brunet transformation, to the confident-or-cocky? debate, to picking songs by obscure artists, the singer divided fans and judges alike.

All of which was nothing compared to Blake's boldest Idol surprise. After five weeks of beatbox abstinence, BShorty made a triumphant return during Bon Jovi Week. "There will be half the audience who absolutely hated it and half the audience will love it," said Simon, in perfect summary. "I think you're a very brave young man."

That's what differentiates Blake from every other Idol competitor--that word: brave. It's what lets him rock a 311 single with the group's singer in the house, and tell Jon Bon Jvi that he's going to bmp-shka-bmp through 16 measures of one of the band's best-known songs. It's also, ultimately, what may have kept Blake from winning Idol--although "This Is My Now," the sappy, ultra-traditional song that was written for the finale, did him no favors. And alas, rearranging the number wasn't an option. "[When I first heard it] I was like, really? All right. I gotta sing this song, shake hands with it, make friends with it. And hopefully perform it well. It's definitely not my style. That track would never be on my album." Even the woman who should be Blake's biggest fan had trouble mustering enthusiasm. "Personally, I didn't care for it," says Blake's mother, Dinah. "But Jordin made the song hers."

Innovators rarely reap the benefits of their boldness (see: Bo Bice paving the way for Chris Daughtry). But we're hopeful about the kind of album Blake will deliver, free from random musical restrictions like "British Invasion Week." As Blake begins working with his idol, 311's Nick Hexum, the door is wide open, and he can't wait to step--or, perhaps, moonwalk--right through it.

American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis is all smiles as he poses with his fans and carries his own luggage into his NYC hotel on Monday.

“I’m kind of glad I didn’t win for, like, contractual reasons,” Blake told People. “I think if you’re first you might have to come back for like three years or something.”

Hot on the heels of Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson and successful rocker Chris Daughtry, Blake is on the fast track to becoming Idol’s next successful “loser.”

“I think we suffer from Jennifer Hudson- and Chris Daughtry-itis, which is people who didn’t win getting great careers and now a lot of the contestants believed it absolutely doesn’t matter,” Simon Cowell has told Entertainment Weekly. “Sometimes there’s part of me thinking, ‘You genuinely couldn’t care less what we’re got to say; everything’s going your own way now.’”

Riding the wave of his newfound fame, Lewis is most interested in spreading his wings as a musician. For the time being, he'll abandon his makeshift music studio outside his parents' Kenmore home in favor of a national label, 19 Entertainment, and the corresponding audience.

While he plans to move to L.A. to "be near the label" and "all my management" for a year or two, Lewis insists he's not cutting ties with B-Shorty's roots and his Kenmore crew.

In a separate teleconference Friday, Lewis, 25, of Bothell, Wash., was asked if he thought the contest might be permanently more hip because of him.

"I can only hope that it keeps the contemporary edge," he said, including when it comes to the recording artists brought in to advise contestants.

This season, golden oldies singer Barry Gibb and Peter Noone were among those playing "Idol" mentor.

When it came to his choice of songs, Lewis said he stayed true to the music he's been making for years, with influences including '80s dance tunes and hip-hop. He deliberately picked one song, Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know" to show he was more than a beatboxer.

He was using "my 'strategery,' as George Bush would say," Lewis said, becoming perhaps the first "Idol" contestant to crack a politically aware joke.

He admires candor, Lewis said a few moments later, responding to a question about the on-air support he got from "The View" hosts Rosie O'Donnell and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. (O'Donnell left the show Friday after a dustup with Hasselbeck.)

"I love Rosie O'Donnell. She just says whatever she wants," he said, adding that's his style as well. "I'm pretty honest and blunt and sometimes a little tactless."

Blake Lewis: 'I'm Glad I Didn't Win'

Blake Lewis may have lost the title of American Idol to Jordin Sparks but he's perfectly fine with his second place finish."I never looked at it as winning and losing. I just tried going out and performing really well each day," the 25-year-old says. "In a sense, I’m kind of glad I didn't win just for like contractual reasons. I think if you're first you might have to come back for like three years or something."

Not that Lewis, who spoke to reporters on a conference call Friday, wants to distance himself from the show. "American Idol is such an amazing show and experience," he adds. "I honestly didn't care one bit [about] winning or losing, because I call myself a winner just by getting into the top 10."

Many Idol watchers – including the judges – say that Lewis' fate was sealed by the final song, "This is My Now," an emotional ballad that clearly suited Sparks' powerful voice over beat-boxer Blake.

Lewis agrees. "'This is My Now" is definitely not my style, a song I would never sing if I didn't have to," he says. "It fit [Jordin] like perfectly. And I honestly think they should have had two songs that were tailored to both of us, but I'm so happy with being second place."

Instead he's focusing on the future, which he hopes includes acting as well as performing music. "If acting comes calling and I get the right opportunities and the right script, or just to do voiceover work for maybe like a Pixar or DreamWorks movie – I think that would be a plus," he says. "I love being goofy, I love doing different voices. I've been doing it since I was a kid."

In the meantime, Lewis will focus on his singing career and he has a specific type of music in mind for his first album.

"My music. I've been making it for seven years," he says. "[It's] very electro-pop, hip-hop music in a sense of Duran Duran [and] Michael Jackson. I'm a child of the '80s, so it's definitely going to have very advanced thing to it with more of a melodic jazzy, like Maroon 5, Jamiroquai, but definitely more on the hip-hop and electronic kind of thing."

Asked which previous American Idol has a career that he would like to emulate, "None of them," says Lewis. "I want to set my own path."

HOLLYWOOD — Blake Lewis might not have revolutionized beatboxing with his stint on "American Idol," but he surely revolutionized "American Idol" with his beatboxing.

The 25-year-old from Bothell, Washington, brought a flavor to the season-six stage never before seen on "Idol." His daring remixes and original song choices kept viewers wondering what he would do next. But the contestant's run came to an end Wednesday when teen queen Jordin Sparks claimed the "Idol" crown (see "Sparks Flies: Jordin Takes 'American Idol' Crown").

We caught up with Lewis after the star-studded finale to talk about his dream collaborations, what to expect from the Idols Live Tour and how two minutes isn't enough time to sing a good song.

MTV: How are you holding up?
Blake Lewis: Great. I'm great. I'm very excited. I couldn't have asked for a better night. Tonight was amazing.

MTV: Let's talk about your collaboration [with Doug E. Fresh]. Sorry, Bette Midler, but Blake's performance was definitely the hottest thing tonight. Was it a dream come true?
Lewis: That was Doug E. allowing me to hang out with him onstage, and that was an honor. Forever etched in my brain. It was one of the hottest times I will ever have onstage. It was just a dream come true. Hopefully I'll get to get him in the studio, and we'll have to do, like, a beatbox track, you know? Get something really down.

MTV: Let's talk about the album. Any news on that?

Lewis: You know, I can only hope in the next, like, two weeks or before the tour that I get signed and get management. Things take [their] course, it seems, from the show. Hopefully I get represented by the creative people I surround myself with and get to make the album I've always wanted to. I've tried to stay true to myself this whole entire time, and I think I've represented myself as creatively as I could with what I got on the show. So I'm excited to do that even more so singing my own songs I've written and, you know, just be me 110 percent.

MTV: We caught up with your parents on the red carpet (see "Sanjaya, Carrie Underwood Still Stealing Spotlight — On 'American Idol' Finale Red Carpet"), and they were telling us all about some of the stuff that you have written. Can you fill us in?
Lewis: My style's like if you took Jamiroquai and mixed it with Citizen Cope. It's like G. Love & Special Sauce. It's more groove-oriented, danceable, though. I love electronic music, I love hip-hop and loop-based music. I want to do that, but I want do that on a more organic tip. You know, have my drummer come in, but then edit the drums and program them and make them crazy and tweak them out. Make a really good danceable, feel-good album, but with a really good jazzy, melodic twist on that.

MTV: If you had any dream collaborator in the studio, who would you pick?
Lewis: B.T. He's my favorite producer pretty much ever. I've been talking to him. He hasn't seen "American Idol," but I opened for him a long time ago and he wanted to work a long time ago. And now we have the opportunity to maybe get together and work. It's not official, but I talked to him for a couple hours about it. ... There's so many amazing producers out there that are more underground. I like DJ Shadow, I love Dan the Automator. Will.I.Am is an amazing producer, and he lives in that realm of hip-hop, dance and pop. ... I'd love to work with anyone that would really want to work with me. I'd love to work with Danger Mouse and Gnarls Barkley and Cee-Lo. Robin Thicke ... The possibilities are endless. I'm putting it out there. If you want to do something, call me!

MTV: We saw on the show that you were always rearranging stuff. Would you ever be interested in producing stuff yourself?
Lewis: I have my own studio at home. I haven't produced, obviously, on a larger scale, but I'd love to. I love making things. I love going from the improv realm and the more jazz-based instant creation, you know, being in front of an audience and creating for them. My music comes from that. All my stuff is live, and then I take it home and I rearrange it, then I write to live music I did in front of people. I'd love to do that with other artists.

MTV: What can we expect on the tour?
Lewis: Tour! Oh, I'm very excited about the tour, because I get to use my loop pedals and my guitar. We're all playing instruments this time. That's never been done before. I think maybe Chris Daughtry played some guitar last year. But everyone plays a different instrument, like Chris Richardson plays drums; he's been playing drums for, like, 15 years. [Chris] Sligh plays guitar, Phil [Stacey] can play keyboard, I play guitar and keyboard, bass. For me, I'm excited because I'm gonna do a one-man band show because I have all my loop pedals from beatboxing and then I play guitar and sing over that, so I'm gonna do kind of like a little medley that I used to do — the only two songs that I used to ever cover. One of them I sang on the show.

MTV: Which one was that?
Lewis: [Maroon 5's] "She Will Be Loved." So I'll probably do that on tour. I have a really cool arrangement that I'd like to do.

MTV: Why didn't you do that [version] during the finale? It sounded pretty faithful to the original.
Lewis: Well, because it's television. We only have two minutes. I only sang half a verse of that song. That's upsetting to me. If I had my way, I'd want to sing a whole song and put my twist on it. So I'm gonna do that on tour.
